Windows 95 contained some new networking features, and since I was one of those crazy people who sampled every flavor of dogfood in the store, I actually tried out all of them. One of the features, a network protocol, I thought was interesting enough that I decided to help them out by forcing everybody else on the team to dogfood it.<\/p>\n

Windows 95 \u5305\u542b\u4e86\u4e00\u4e9b\u65b0\u7684\u7f51\u7edc\u529f\u80fd\u3002\u9274\u4e8e\u6211\u662f\u4f1a\u904d\u5c1d\u5e97\u91cc\u6bcf\u79cd\u53e3\u5473\u72d7\u7cae\u7684\u90a3\u79cd\u4eba\uff08\u8bd1\u6ce8\uff1a\u89c1\u4e0a\u4e00\u7bc7<\/a>\uff09\uff0c\u6211\u662f\u771f\u7684\u90fd\u8bd5\u4e86\u4e00\u4e2a\u904d\u3002\u5bf9\u4e8e\u5176\u4e2d\u4e00\u4e2a\u529f\u80fd\uff08\u67d0\u4e2a\u7f51\u7edc\u534f\u8bae\uff09\uff0c\u6211\u89c9\u5f97\u5b83\u5f88\u6709\u8da3\uff0c\u6700\u7ec8\u4f7f\u6211\u51b3\u5b9a\u901a\u8fc7\u8ba9\u56e2\u961f\u91cc\u7684\u6bcf\u4e2a\u4eba\u90fd\u5c1d\u4e00\u5c1d\u8fd9\u4efd\u72d7\u7cae\u7684\u5473\u9053\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u6765\u5e2e\u52a9\u5bf9\u5e94\u56e2\u961f\u7684\u4eba\u5c06\u5b83\u505a\u597d\u3002<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s how I did it.<\/p>\n

I had a bunch of debugging documents and other materials that people generally found useful. I put them on my machine, which acted as a file server. Anybody who wanted these files had to install the network protocol in order to get them. And the files were valuable enough that people were willing to take a chance on a new network driver just to get them. Not only did the client side of the driver get a lot of dogfood test coverage, so too did the server side, since my computer would be servicing a lot of simultaneous connections from people reading my documents. I remember finding a variety of interesting bugs this way. (And of course I ran stress over this protocol.)<\/p>\n

\u6211\u624b\u91cc\u6709\u4e00\u5957\u8c03\u8bd5\u7528\u7684\u6587\u6863\u3001\u4ee5\u53ca\u5176\u5b83\u4e00\u4e9b\u8d44\u6599\uff0c\u5bf9\u5f00\u53d1\u4eba\u5458\u6765\u8bf4\u90fd\u5f88\u6709\u7528\u3002\u6211\u5c06\u8fd9\u4e9b\u8d44\u6599\u653e\u5728\u6211\u7684\u673a\u5668\u4e0a\uff0c\u5e76\u8ba9\u6211\u7684\u673a\u5668\u4f5c\u4e3a\u4e00\u53f0\u6587\u4ef6\u670d\u52a1\u5668\u3002\u4efb\u4f55\u60f3\u8981\u83b7\u53d6\u8fd9\u4e9b\u8d44\u6599\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u90fd\u5f97\u5b89\u88c5\u8fd9\u4e2a\u7f51\u7edc\u534f\u8bae\u624d\u80fd\u8bbf\u95ee\u5b83\u3002\u8fd9\u4e9b\u8d44\u6599\u7684\u4ef7\u503c\uff0c\u5df2\u7ecf\u9ad8\u5230\u4eba\u4eec\u5b81\u53ef\u5b89\u88c5\u4e00\u5957\u65b0\u7684\u7f51\u7edc\u9a71\u52a8\u4e5f\u8981\u62ff\u5230\u5b83\u7684\u7a0b\u5ea6\u4e86\u3002\u5982\u6b64\uff0c\u8fd9\u4e2a\u9a71\u52a8\u4e0d\u5149\u5728\u5ba2\u6237\u7aef\u4e00\u4fa7\u88ab\u5c1d\u4e86\u4e2a\u904d\uff0c\u5728\u670d\u52a1\u7aef\u4e00\u4fa7\u4e5f\u4e00\u6837\uff0c\u56e0\u4e3a\u6211\u7684\u673a\u5668\u5bf9\u524d\u6765\u9605\u8bfb\u8fd9\u4e9b\u8d44\u6599\u7684\u4eba\u4eec\u540c\u65f6\u5efa\u7acb\u4e86\u5927\u91cf\u7684\u8fde\u63a5\u3002\u6211\u8bb0\u5f97\u901a\u8fc7\u8fd9\u79cd\u65b9\u5f0f\uff0c\u5f97\u4ee5\u53d1\u73b0\u4e86\u51e0\u4e2a\u6709\u8da3\u7684bug\u3002\uff08\u5f53\u7136\u4e86\uff0c\u6211\u4e5f\u6709\u5bf9\u8fd9\u4e2a\u534f\u8bae\u8fdb\u884c\u538b\u529b\u6d4b\u8bd5\u3002\uff09<\/p>\n

I later became friends with the lead tester for the protocol, and he told me that my simple act of force-feeding the dogfood to every other member of the Windows 95 team was a key element of making their feature a success.<\/p>\n
